The Chronic was a double album by American rapper and record producer Dr. Dre, released in December 1992 by Death Row Records and Beats Electronics. It contains production from Dr. Dre himself along with guest contributions from several notable hip-hop artists, such as Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Tha Dogg Pound (Daz Dillinger & Kurupt), Nate Dogg and Warren G. The Chronic is considered one of the most influential albums of the early 1990s in gangsta rap and its impact has been compared to that of Dr. Dre's debut album The Chronic (1984). The record spawned several hit singles and became the first album in history to reach sales of over 5 million with no airplay support. As of March 1997, the album has sold 5,110,000 copies in the United States according to Nielsen SoundScan and has been certified diamond by the RIAA. The Chronic was regarded as one of 1990's pioneering albums in gangsta rap as Dr. Dre featured Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg on almost every track and rapped himself only occasionally – a stark contrast to his debut, for which he had not used any guest rappers whatsoever. The album also marked the beginning of Dr. Dre's musical production style for other artists. It was ranked #103 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, and #1 in Clash's "The 100 Greatest Albums to Come Out of the UK". Pitchfork Media also included it in their best albums of the 1990s. It is considered by many to be one of the best hip hop albums ever recorded. The album was certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on August 19, 1995. Following his departure from N.W. A after the band's album "Straight Outta Compton", Dr. Dre continued his career as a solo artist. In 1991, Dr. Dre released his debut solo album, The Chronic, which included record producer DJ Yella and best friend Eazy-E on track 3 ("High Powered"). The album was highly successful due to its gangsta rap context and sharp production. The Chronic sold over 1 million copies in a month of its release and reigned at #1 on the "Billboard" 200 chart for 8 non-consecutive weeks. Dr. Dre's former group N.W.A released the compilation album 100 Miles and Runnin on July 12, 1991 featuring a solo track from Dre, "Natural Born Killaz" with Ice Cube and the rest of the tracks made by N.W.A members without Dr. Dre as he was working on his solo album at that time. The album's production and release fueled rumors of a feud between members Ice Cube and Dr. eccc085e13
